Calling Occupants of Inter Planetary Social Networks August 4, 2008

Bebo has announced plans to send 500 user generated messages into outer space. The lucky recipients will be the inhabitants, or not, of the closest planet to Earth capable of sustaining life, Gliese 581c.

This is a clever piece of PR – the Bebo brand is well established and it’s a smart way of promoting themselves as a market leader. It also plays on the fascination of their target demographic with all things intergalactic. The timing with the release of the new X-Files film is also probably not coincidence.

The messages are due to arrive in around 2029, and who knows, by then the leading social network may well be Spacebook…
