Watching you, watching me, watching us September 30, 2008

There was much bemusement in our office yesterday when we heard that MI6 is using Facebook as a recruitment tool to lure the next generation of spies.

On first reaction, this seems absolutely ridiculous and ironic as surely MI6 is all about being secret and using huge amounts of discretion?! So why then advertise on what’s probably the world’s most open platform for finding out information you shouldn’t be in a few easy clicks.

However, after deliberating this topic over with myself, I think Facebook is in fact the best playground to recruit spies. For a start, who hasn’t ‘spied’ on an ex-boyfriend, colleague, friend or had a look at that ‘good looking’ person’s holiday snaps? The Facebook generation knows no different – invading other’s privacy is second nature to Facebook fans.

What’s more, the Secret Intelligence Service must have known that being a little more dynamic and controversial with their recruitment tactics would have got them some great coverage! Job well done.
