Revival of the great village pub. Tweet all about it… June 24, 2009

I’ve just been reading about The Publican’s Proud of Pubs campaign that is taking place in a few weeks on July 11th to 19th that is essentially a celebration of pubs in the UK. I think this is a great idea and much needed at a time where six pubs are closing every day (two village pubs are closing each day), according to The Telegraph. In my opinion, there’s nothing better than stumbling upon a quaint, little village pub that serves up inexpensive wine and fantastic homemade food (big portions essential). Throw in lots of sun and a beer garden and that’s my perfect Sunday afternoon. I’d opt for that any day over the likes of Wetherspoons and Burger King.

Anyhow, I’ve been very impressed with how the campaign is progressing so far in social media terms. On the first day of the campaign, people are being urged to set up Twitter pages and Facebook groups for their local pubs. The Publican has also set up an online photo gallery as well as a competition to Tweet about the strangest things you can do in a pub (they’re hoping to reach 1001). All simple ideas but hopefully it’ll get people talking about – and supporting – their locals. And it kind of brings back that old village community feel – both in person and online. Let’s hope the campaign proves to be a real success.
