‘Social media’ is not the first thing that would usually spring into one’s mind when you talk about The Ritz Hotel. For as beautiful, traditional and unique as it is, it’s not known as being at the forefront of technology. Yet I may soon stand corrected. For I’ve just read on Travolution that The Ritz has appointed TravelClick to develop a social media strategy for them. Word has it that this will include everything from blogs, to guest review sites and digital viral content. It’ll include Facebook and Twitter for last minute promotions, customer relations, guest feedback and for engaging fans and guests.

I actually think this is very cool and am curious to see how this works for a hotel which doesn’t, perhaps, usually attract the usual Facebook and Twitter suspects. It’s the kind of activity that will either do rather well and attract a whole new market – or, dare I say it, it could fall on its face due to social media just not working for this kind of exclusive establishment.
