Was interested to see that STA Travel won ‘Best Use of Social Media’ at the Travolution Awards a couple of days ago. Curious to learn more about just what does make STA Travel so special (aside from the fact they safely sent me backpacking around the world for eight months some years ago now), I’ve taken a look at the dedicated social media section of their site, STA Travelbuzz, and, sure enough, there is an eclectic mix of exciting multimedia content eagerly posted by travel enthusiasts from around the world. As well as packed blogs, photoalbums and forums, STA appears to have covered everything social media from all the usual suspects but they’re also embracing some of the smaller and emerging tools and sites including TripTie, Jaiku and Tangler. They even have their own STA Travel Tools page with an abundance of widgets and applications for their community to explore and share. But I think the most impressive thing is just how much people are really engaging with the site and each other. In my humble opinion, I’d have to agree with the Travolution Awards judging panel and say that STA Travel is certainly one of the leaders in this industry. With some of the other brands needing to play catch up…
